The Gears

The WATERWHEEL drives a shaft that runs through the wall into the mill. This shaft turns the PITWHEEL which has bevelled teeth that rotates the power through 90 degrees and meshes with the CROWN WHEEL. This also has bevelled cogs and drives the large upright oak MAINSHAFT.

Also on the mainshaft and above the crown wheel is the SPURWHEEL. This is a cast iron wheel with wooden teeth. The spurwheel cogs mesh with the much smaller STONE NUT which drives another vertical shaft that passes up to the "stone" floor above and drives the millstones directly...
